Your first campervan rental can feel like a lot of information at once. You are excited to start the trip, staff are explaining unfamiliar systems, luggage is waiting and the road is calling.
That is exactly when easy-to-prevent mistakes happen. Here are ten things to avoid before you leave the depot.
1. Rushing the handover
Give the pickup enough time. Ask questions and operate the important systems yourself instead of only watching someone demonstrate them.
2. Assuming every scratch is already recorded
Walk around the camper and compare what you see with the official damage record. If you spot something missing, raise it before departure and document it clearly.
3. Taking only one or two photos
Take wide photos of every side plus close-ups of existing damage. Add interior photos and a short walk-around video. Keep the originals until the deposit is settled.
4. Leaving without testing the main systems
Make sure you understand the fridge, heating, water, electricity, gas and toilet. The depot is the easiest place to ask for help.
5. Not checking what equipment is included
Confirm the contents of the camper before you leave. Cables, hose, levelling blocks, chairs, table and other accessories can be easy to overlook.
6. Forgetting the vehicle height and size
A camper is not a normal car. Know the height, width and length before you meet a low bridge, parking garage, narrow lane or tight campsite entrance.
7. Ignoring fuel, mileage and other dashboard information
Photograph the dashboard at pickup. Check the fuel policy and any mileage limitations in your booking.
8. Not learning the return procedure at pickup
Ask what needs to be done before return: fuel, waste water, toilet cassette, cleaning, equipment and timing. It is much easier to plan when you know the rules from day one.
9. Saving emergency information for later
Put roadside-assistance and rental-company emergency contacts into your phone before leaving. If the company has an app or specific reporting process, know where to find it.
10. Trying to remember everything without a system
The handover contains too many small details to rely on memory. A simple checklist lets you concentrate on the camper rather than wondering what you have forgotten.
